Our Iceland Airwaves 2013 preview continues with the lovely Icelandic singer/songwriter Lovísa Elísabet Sigrúnardóttir, better known as Lay Low. Lovísa's voice is reminiscent of Zee Avi on most of her bluesy/folk songs such as I Forget It's There or Donna Mo's Blues. On The Backbone, from Lay Low's most recent release, there is definitely more of a Zero 7 vibe. Driftwood is looking forward to seeing the Icelandic-Sri Lankan singer at Harpa Norðurljós next Wednesday night @20:50 during the Record Records showcase as well as her show at Harpa Kaldalón on Thursday for the unique Airwords event @ 00:10.

Iceland Airwaves '13 Preview: Heim by LOCKERBIE [2013]
The first Icelandic band we're previewing for Airwaves'13 are a quartet from Reykjavik who "mix the usual pop/rock [with] powerful but ambient post-rock". Lockerbie's Heim is the first single to come off their upcoming release. Looking forward to learning more about them October 30th when they'll be playing Harpa Silfurberg at 8pm. Iceland Airwaves '13 Preview: If You're My Girl, Then I'm Your Man by PAPA [2012]
The fact that PAPA opened for Cold War Kids just last week at The Wiltern was enough for me to go check them out. Just like Team Driftwood, Darren and Daniel are from Los Angeles...even better! But wait there 's more: their debut album, Tender Madness, will be released in the UK on my birthday (Nov 4)...ah, thanks guys! And last but not least, "If You're My Girl, Then I'm Your Man" is a fantastic song. Driftwood will be at the Reykjavik Art Museum on Nov. 1 (8pm) to hear it in person. Locally, you can catch them at their LA homecoming show at the El Rey in December.

Iceland Airwaves '13 Preview: Ghosts by ON AN ON [2013]
In almost a month, Team Driftwood will be heading back to the wonderful town of Reykjavik for the 2013 Iceland Airwaves festival. This years lineup includes the likes of Kraftwerk, Yo La Tengo, Savages and a long list of up and coming bands from Iceland, the US and all over the world. Leading up to the start of the festival we hope to introduce you to some new bands that we are excited about seeing for the first time.
To start, let's both get introduced to ON AN ON. The trio from Chicago and Minneapolis, who just played dates on the West coast last week, have played support for a few Driftwood favorites like The Joy Formidable and Junip, as well as Geographer. Fittingly, the guys recently put out a cover of Björks's Unison. Hopefully they'll try it out live in front of her hometown crowd when they play at beautiful Harpa (Norðurljós) on Nov. 2 @10:40p.

Mountain Sound by Of Monsters and Men [2012]
Excited to see another of our favorite Icelandic bands tonight as Of Monsters and Men take on the rotating stage of the KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas (Night 2 - which will be webcast on Tuesday??). And as fun as it will be to see them here in Los Angeles, this video definitely makes us miss the country we've become quite fond of.

Dýrð í dauðaþögn by Ásgeir Trausti
Another great Airwaves'12 discovery from the motherland...Ásgeir Trausti. This 20 year old Icelander played just about every day of the festival...from off-venue shows at "Smallest off-Venue in the World presented by Iceland Inspires" to packed official shows at Deutsche bar. Thankfully Team Driftwood was tipped off to the up and comer by a friendly rental car employee. Ásgeir's voice will instantly remind you of Jeff Buckley and it seems that in the same way that every female Icelandic singer sounds like Bjork, many male Icelandic singers recall the fragile tones of Buckley's voice.

AIRWAVES WEEK: Hearts by I BREAK HORSES
Our recap of Iceland Airwaves discoveries continues with Sweden's I Break Horses. We caught this electronic duo before DIIV at IÐNÓ, a quaint historic theatre/restaurant (originally built in 1897!) located on the banks of the picturesque Reykjavic Pond. Their buzzing synthesizers and majestic vocals brought to mind the shoegaze and dream pop sounds of bands we've enjoyed, new and old. A pleasant surprise they were. Sweden strikes again.

Góða tungl (Good Moon) by SAMARIS
ICELAND AIRWAVES'12 Week continues on Driftwood. One of the best things about Airwaves is stumbling upon a new band you've never heard of. With most of the bands being local Icelandic bands, that happened quite a bit. Heading to the Reykjavik Art Museum early to get a good spot for Phantogram paid off as we were introduced to Samaris. The Icelandic trio consists of a clarinet, some electronic drums/samples/synth and yet another beautiful Bjork-like voice (there were many in Iceland). This song accompanied us on our journey as it was often playing on our Icelandic Air flight home.
